Austria is heading into a remarkable weather turnaround this weekend, as a series of warm fronts push aside the recent snow chaos and usher in springlike temperatures. After days of deep winter conditions, large parts of the country can expect milder air, rising snow lines, and even sunshine — though not without some final bursts of unsettled weather.
Sunday: Another Warm Front and Very Mild Air
A second warm front will sweep across northern Austria on Sunday. From Salzburg eastward, frequent rainfall is expected until the afternoon, with the snow line rising further to around 1,500 to nearly 2,000 meters. Only isolated cold-air pockets may see brief icy conditions early on.
From midday, sunshine increasingly breaks through from the west, and southern Alpine regions remain mostly dry. Strengthening westerly winds will transport notably mild air into the Danube region and along the eastern Alps.
Morning temperatures range from –3°C to +6°C, with daytime highs between 4°C and 14°C.
Monday: Unsettled Start, Milder Finish
Another disturbance arrives from the west on Monday morning, bringing widespread rain and a snow line between 1,200 and 1,500 meters. By afternoon, precipitation gradually tapers off and clouds begin to break. Only northern Alpine areas remain grey and wet for longer. The far south once again benefits from more stable, mostly dry conditions.
Westerly winds blow moderately to briskly, except in the south where conditions remain calmer. Morning lows fall between –2°C and +8°C, with highs reaching 6°C to 14°C.
From Tuesday: Sunshine and Spring Temperatures
On Tuesday, the east may still see a few lingering showers, but from Wednesday onward, Austria can expect widespread sunshine and exceptionally mild weather. Temperatures are forecast to climb to around 16°C — and in some spots, even reach a springlike 20°C.
Winter Not Finished Yet
Despite the upcoming warmth, meteorologists caution that winter is not over. A significant cooldown is expected again next weekend, reminding Austrians that February can still deliver surprises.
